THE JUSTICE LEAGUE OF CANADA

George Miller's Justice League of America movie is like one of those preemies surviving on a ventilator - barely clinging to life and thankfully not your kid. There's a ton of turmoil happening behind the scenes on this one, and the latest bit of news is that Warner Bros wants to take the film out of Australia and shoot it in Canada. Miller, as you may know, is an Australian, so it's certainly a matter of pride for him to bring a big budget motion picture home. Warner Bros, on the other hand, might rather have this one shooting closer to home, where they can keep a watchful eye on things. You remember what happened the last time they shot a superhero film in Australia, right? Hint: Superman Returns.Meanwhile, Aint It Cool News is reporting that Miller has hired his Martian Manhunter and it'll be... the guy who played Toecutter in Mad Max. Huh. It seems like star power is not really a consideration for this film, is it? There's no word on how Martian Manhunter will be handled; ie, will he be mocapped or will Toecutter be all done up in green bodypaint and little else but a red harness?
This is all on the heels of reports that Batman and Superman are being written out of the film, which means the whole damn thing would have to be rewritten (Talia Al'Ghul was a major villain, among other major roles these two play in the current script).I hope this movie never stops floundering about. This is going to make a good book someday.

Sweet lord why the don't just adapt one of the 40,000 decent to good comics or episodes of that Justice League cartoon I will never know. General audience won't care that it's been done before and the writers won't have to suck as much because they have a clear outline. The throw in some smashing or robots and Wonder Woman making out with one of the heroes and you're done.
Mountain out of a mole hill on this one...
Also, who's excited to see the Smallville lovers start throwing out a "they're shooting in Canada so Tom Wellings can play Superman" theory. Sure it would be kind of neat, but it won't happen.

Outrageous (I always wanted to use that word)

My solution is just to film Kingdom Come motion capture style and make it look like Alex Ross' artwork. That way there won't be any associations with current or potential franchises like the Batman Begins franchise, since all the characters will be old and animated Beowulf style. Kingdom Come is a great story and contains most of the important characters. Some of the tertiary characters could be scaled back to allow for more focus on characters that are a bit left out of the story, like Green Lantern or the Flash. It's the best way to go, seriously. Justice League isn't Justice League without Bats and Supes, but from where they're going with the casting it's just going to screw everything up to have someone younger than Christian Bale playing Batman in a world where he has not only begun, but has joined the Justice League. So again, the solution is to do some Elseworlds story and separate it from the individual Batman/Superman/Wonder Woman franchises with a different visual look and two or three decade generation gap.

I think Kingdom Come is awful. I'm not even much of a fan of the artwork. Although I like the concept of simulated space-farming, I can't see how that's a movie they would possibly make.

That picture is from the unaired JLA TV pilot from a decade or so ago that's available in bootleg form at just about any comic convention you'll ever go to. I have seen it, but I don't remember a whole lot from it, except that the Green Lantern doesn't seem to really be based on any of the comic versions at all, despite having been named after one of them (guy Gardner, I think), and that the Flash runs really fast. You see, he's SO fast that he can move from ONE end of the kitchen table to the OTHER end in roughly a millisecond less than it would take one of us mere mortals to accomplish the same task. Yeah, they blew part of their tiny budget to show us THAT. I agree that "Kingdom Come" would make a terrible movie. I thought the comic was OK, but it had so many characters and is so stooped in the history of so DC Comics. Outside of the Superman and Batman stuff, none of it makes any sense to a casual reader, and you could expect the same thing to happen to your average moviegoers. The story is a continuity nightmare and so much would have to be cut, that it wouldn't even resemble the original story anymore. It's also very much a Superman story, and if people don't care about the "Superman Returns" Superman, then how can they be counted on to care about the older version of the same character?

Studio going full speed with superhero film
By DIANE GARRETT
Now that the writers strike has been resolved, Warner Bros. is pushing ahead with its plans to make "Justice League" in time for a 2009 debut.
Warners tried to get "Justice League" into production earlier, but put it on indefinite hold in January, allowing the cast options to expire (Daily Variety, Jan. 16). At the time, the studio said it didn't want to move ahead until the scribes had another shot at the script.
Scribes Kieran and Michele Mulroney are busy polishing up the script, which is expected back at the studio in several weeks, and the cast has been advised to keep training for their superhero roles. Director George Miller is in pre-production in Australia.
Adam Brody, cast as the Flash, is the biggest star in the superhero lineup. Rapper Common nabbed the Green Lantern role; other roles went to lesser-known thesps such as Armie Hammer Jr. (Batman) and Megan Gale (Wonder Woman).
"Justice League," based on a DC Comic, is a huge priority for the studio and considered a launching pad for future superhero projects down the line.
Warners needs another tentpole for its 2009 slate, which is a little thin at the moment. Studio had been vying for Roland Emmerich's "2012," but that project went to Sony. The studio just skedded "Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins" for May 22 and Spike Jonze's "Where the Wild Things Are" for Oct. 16. The only other pic it has dated is Zack Snyder's "Watchmen," set for release March 6.

George Miller shouldn't have to put up with this shit. He should just walk away right now before it gets worse!

oh ye of little faith. This is George Freakin' Miller! The Road Warrior didn't have a star in it either, remember?

George Freakin' Miller has pulled together the crappiest cast of nobodies ever assembled, so I got no faith in George Freakin' Miller anymore.

I put a lot of thought into this project (more so than needed as I’m neither Miller nor an executive in Burbank) and here’s what I would do with this project. First off, scrap this project all together. Then get rid of Bryan Singer as director of the next Superman film; have George Miller direct this project as a quasi-sequel to Returns, dropping the Man of Steel subtitle and go at it with “World’s Finest” as the title. The big set up would be some incredibly huge threat that Superman himself can’t handle alone and we’re introduced to a few characters who will establish the basic foundation of the JL. It would serve as a backdoor origin for the spin off Justice League franchise without burning this Superman franchise.
Just keep Batman out of the series. Keep him out until Nolan is finished with his films.

Devin, Quint on AICN also went on to say in the TB of that article that his source says that Superman and Batman are still IN the movie. Have you gotten any further info on that point?
