LARRY GROSS IS PROVIDING A TREMENDOUS PUBLIC SERVICE
Walter Hill's frequent collaborator and, more recently, the writer of the underrated We Don't Live Here Anymore is recounting his experiences on 48 Hrs. at Movie City News. Here's a taste:

"According to Joel [Silver], Gene Kelly hated just about everyone, but especially Frank Sinatra...first because Sinatra was so wealthy but especially because Sinatra got to be in Guys and Dolls, and losing the part of Sky Masterson, a part Goldwyn had promised Kelly, was the great grief of Kelly's life."

It could use a more thorough proofreading, but there are gems scattered throughout. And Gross balances the gossip with insights gleaned from Tolstoy and Hardy. Heady stuff.

By the way, there's nothing on Eddie Murphy. Yet.

THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT
Lionsgate has moved the release date for Frank Miller's take on Will Eisner's The Spirit from January of 2009 to Christmas this year. They say that the reaction to footage shown at New York Comic Con spurred this decision; counter programming against awards season certainly couldn't have hurt (and do they think they have a shot at some technical awards?). Although if you ask me someone at Lionsgate realized they've been selling a 2009 movie like it's coming out this summer and decided to at least release the film in the same calendar year that they're blowing their entire advertising budget.

IRON MAN BANKS!
Jon Favreau's excellent and deserving Iron Man has pulled in around $38,000,000 in North America already. Do you part and make sure that Saturday and Sunday carry this big beautiful blast of a film someplace special.

JON FAVREAU IS PRETTY HAPPY YOU SAW IRON MAN
I just got off the phone with my brother, who saw Iron Man tonight in Century City (which is a part of LA. Everything here is Something City). On the way out of the theater he ran into Jon Favreau and Robert Downey Jr, who were shaking hands and thanking people for coming out to the movie. My brother chatted with Favreau about the old RKO Keith theater in Queens, where we used to see movies and where Favreau ushered.

It's not unusual for movie people to spy on opening weekend crowds, but how cool is it that these two shook all those hands? Makes you feel a touch less cynical about this business.

BARRY EISLER'S BACK!
With a great blog right here. Also, the film version of his Rain Fall begins filming in Tokyo this week with Gary Oldman as John Rain's CIA nemesis.
