Special thanks to CHUD contributor Mike Flynn for bringing this to my attention.
I’ve always been fascinated with Theology. I come from a religious background, so I should, and among all those things is the fascinating tale of a boy who becomes a man who can exorcise demons, heal the sick, and preaches about the apocalypse.
Paul Verhoeven is a name you should know if you like genre cinema. He’s made classics like Robocop, and Total Recall. He’s also part of a group known as the “Jesus Seminar” of which he’s the only one without a degree in Theology. He put all this knowledge into a book called Jesus Of Nazareth. I got it when it came out 2 years ago, and it is indeed a page turner. Verhoeven goes about under the pretense that Jesus was not divine, but just a man. He gives his own takes on how Jesus performed miracles amongst other things. He’s also wanted to turn it into a movie.
His movie is one step closer now that Roger Avary has been hired to write an adaptation of the book for the film.
Here’s hoping this gets the production up and running in the near future, since Verhoeven’s been under the radar for some time now. In the past decade, he only did 2 films: Hollow Man and Black Book. If he’s as passionate about this film as he’s seemed, then he will make this. I know I’m certainly looking forward to it. The book reminds me some of The Last Temptation Of Christ, and that’s one of my favorite films of all time.
