Is he Khan or isn’t he? (hint: he’s not)
I question how necessary the secrecy is surrounding JJ Abrams’ films. Cloverfield (which he produced) was incredibly straightforward for a film where its lead-up was so shrouded in secrecy. But that’s nothing compared to Super 8, a film where its only secret was that there were no secrets at all. Point being: walking like ducks and what not. Not so with Kahn’s inclusion in Star Trek 2, it would seem – as Simon Pegg (Scotty) now sets the record straight in this Cinemablend piece:
“It’s not Khan. That’s a myth. Everyone’s saying it is, but it’s not. I think people just want to have a scoop. It annoys me – it’s beyond the point to just ferret around for spoilers all the time to try to be the first to break them.”
And so it’s back to Benedict Cumberbatch’s character being a mystery. Let’s let JJ have his fun and leave it at that for now. When I look at the above pic of Cumberbatch I don’t really see Khan in there, anyways. I suspect the character is somebody Trek fans will be familiar with; and I also suspect that, whenever he’s a revealed, a collective “Who?” will be uttered by everyone else.
Honestly, all I’m hoping for is a good film. I would be much more interested in seeing Abrams introduce a new villain as opposed to treading old territory. But, for whatever reason, it’s very important to JJ that we not know just yet.
