I think we all need at least one really nice positive thing about the entertainment business every single day of the year, including weekends. Sometimes it may be something simple, like a video that showcases something fun and sometimes it may be a movie poster that embraces the aesthetic we all want Hollywood to aspire to. Sometimes it may be a long-winded diatribe. Sometimes it’ll be from the staff and extended family of CHUD.com. Maybe even you readers can get in on it. So, take this to the bank. Every day, you will get a little bit of positivity from one column a day here. Take it with you. Maybe it’ll help you through a bad day or give folks some fun things to hunt down in their busy celluloid digesting day.

Beck’s Record Club

I’ve always liked Beck, though I have never been a very devout fan. While his albums are typically populated with numerous fun and catchy grooves, the serenely woebegone Sea Change was the first Beck album that really felt like it was about something to me. But I’ve always found Beck the person interesting. Maybe because he headlined the first big concert I went to in high school (a two-day affair called “Edge Fest”). Maybe because he was on Futurama. Maybe because he does things like Record Club.

I think that pic above does a pretty thorough job of explaining what Record Club is. I love it when artists use their free time for little experiments like this. The tracks are all put up in the form of vimeo videos, many of which unfortunately employ obnoxious and juvenile video FX that obscure the inherently interesting window we have into the behind-the-scenes process — which I think is a good portion of the fun here. The videos without the stupid FX are the best, but ignoring the visuals, the music is pretty excellent all around.

Here are a few choice selections:

Record Club: INXS “Need You Tonight” from Beck Hansen on Vimeo.

Record Club: Songs Of Leonard Cohen “So Long, Marianne” from Beck Hansen on Vimeo.

Record Club: Velvet Underground & Nico “All Tomorrow’s Parties” from Beck Hansen on Vimeo.
