I read a book called Game of Shadows last year. It was about steroids in baseball. It was dreadfully boring.
Warner Bros. just announced the title for the new Guy Ritchie/Bob Downey/J-Law Sherlock Holmes movie. It’s Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows and it’s dreadfully boring. For a title. Granted a famous Bard once remarked about how a name is meaningless without the context.
I wasn’t a fan of the first ‘Sherlock’ film. But only because it was much more concerned with set pieces than it had any right being. Only because it wasn’t remarkable at all. Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law make for a surprisingly excellent pairing and there’s no denying Mark Strong’s value as a villain. Even Guy Ritchie did nothing to disprove his merit as the right guy for the job. The film just wasn’t that good but if the sequel knows to focus more on the characters and their quirks and build an actual mystery at the center of the film all will be forgiven.
But that title is really not interesting. Scarily so. Either way, millions of us will be there happy to pony up in December when the film is released. Once we have more details and footage of Jared Harris as Moriarty and Stephen Fry doing what he does I’m sure the dumb title will be but an afterthought.
