A little over a week ago came the story that Bruckheimer, Cruise, and co. were all hot under the collar to bring Top Gun back to the screens with a sequel- and HitFix is now reporting that Tony Scott is ready to take to the skies as well.
While there is still scripting and intense schedule tango’ing to figure out before this film could ever get slated, Scott jumped into it like it’s a foregone conclusion, apparently planning a visit to the latest cutting-edge air combat facility- where kids sit behind computers and control unmanned drones.
“I’m not waiting for a script. I’m going to do my homework. I’m going down to I think it’s Fallon, Nevada, down near New Mexico and it’s a whole different world now… These computer geeks — these kids play war games in a trailer in Fallon, Nevada and if we ever went to war or were in the Middle East or the Far East or wherever it is, these guys can actually fly drones. They are unmanned aircraft. They operate them and then they party all night.”
Scott isn’t interested in seeing any kind of reboot of the franchise, and so he apparently jumped on as soon as the idea of a straight squeal as soon as it was mentioned, citing great interest in the lives of these young men. Still no word on Maverick’s place in the script, though Scott mentions that many of the ace fighter pilots ended up as testers for these drones. The project is at least a film or two out for Scott, which makes sense considering Cruise and Bruckhiemer have plenty lined up themselves for awhile. Scott’s also got to get his crazy train film released on November 11th, before moving on to one of his other projects, which could include the crime film with a hell of a cast (Statham, Rourke, Bardem, Walken) or Emma’s War, for which details are scant.
