Appaloosa was the film that reminded me how much I loved Open Range. These westerns that arrive in the middle of the year to remind us of why we should care about one of America’s true art forms. But, nobody else shares your enthusiasm. Hell, your enthusiasm is a little muddled as you pass the motion picture along your way to see the latest Awards darling. You loved it when Ed Harris shaked his ass in Creepshow, but will you enjoy Harris vs. Mortensen? Only time will tell.

Swing Vote reminds of what Kevin Costner used to be. He saved Whitney Houston and taught us that Robin Hood had a Northern California accent. I’m not sure what this Disney subsidiary production was trying to achieve. It has the low-key wackiness that used to accompany the maudlin Touchstone films of the mid-90s. But, it tries to be a message picture. The only thing is that there’s no message. The film would’ve found an audience if it would’ve stuck with the more apt title Douche vs. Turd Sandwich. But, I guess that Philip Seymour Hoffman wasn’t able to fit into the Turd Sandwich suit.

Mirrors is
another in a long line of films that informed my decision to shun American Horror. Kiefer Sutherland does his best to play against forced scares and studio edits. But, the direction suffers from the lack of an informed script. The two extra minutes of ill-placed CG scares don’t add anything to the mix. You get to hear the director try to explain away the lack of any real horror in the film. That’s fun for a listen or two.
