nightmare2010

Get ready for Freddy, once more, as Krueger gets get to have another remake. Tracking Boards announced today that David Leslie Johnson (the highly underrated Orphan) has signed on to write the script for a new A Nightmare on Elm Street movie.

What about Platinum Dunes you say, the studio that had bought the rights and had made that (not that bad) 2010 version starring Jackie Earle Haley and Rooney Mara? No idea, there’s no mention of them. Maybe they’ve actually sold the rights back to where they came from. The 2010 remake of course grossed about $63 million domestic, more than any other Nightmare flick before that. Technically speaking, it was a success, but after having tried sequels to horror remakes once with The Texas Chainsaw: The Beginning, Platinum apparently swore off from making more. Instead, they’re actually making sequels to other works right now. Turtles which was okayish, and Ouija which was utter crap, to be precise.

Could a new Nightmare on Elm Street movie be a blast? Yes, absolutely. The remake had a pretty great actor for Freddy, and Freddy’s final goal was remarkably evil, but everytime they tried to recreate a classic moment it was just a horrendous CGI mess, and they obviously failed hard at creating an exciting nightmare world. Just look at movies like Lost River, Enter the Void, or even the ancient Jennifer Lopez flick The Cell, and it’s easy to imagine what a truly trippy, unforgettable horror world could look like. Let’s see whether New Line reels in an interesting director.

Let’s just hope they didn’t just see Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare and thought “Yeah, we should probably do that with a current gen console!”

What about you guys? Would you prefer another attempt at an actual scary movie, or should they go the way of the teen fantasy adventure that was Renny Harlin’s highly successful movie Cutthroat Island, The Covenant, The Legend of Hercules, Devil’s Pass, 5 Days of War, 12 Rounds, The Cleaner, Exorcist: The Beginning, Mindhunters, Driven, A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master?
