In a year where the bad guys ruled, American Gangster seems to have become the forgotten masterpiece. While No Country for Old Men and There Will be Blood deserve all the recognition they received, one would imagine a movie starring Denzel Washington as a drug lord chased by down-and-dirty cop Russell Crowe, directed by Ridley Scott, would be getting a little more attention come Oscar season. The movie received only two nominations and neither was for the three aforementioned stars. Ruby Dee did surprise a lot of people when she won Best Supporting Actress at the SAG Awards and might bring the film some more attention come next Sunday evening. There will be a couple of versions to choose from. The first is the 2-Disc Edition and the second a 3-Disc Edition, available for a limited time only. Lately, I have come to assume that means get it Tuesday or don’t get it at all. I could be wrong, but I don’t trust anyone anymore with these limited editions. Both of these edition will include the theatrical cut and the unrated extended cut. The 3-Disc Collector’s Edition will also be available as part of Gangsters: The Ultimate Film Collection, released the same day. This 9-Disc set includes American Gangster 3-Disc Collector’s Edition, Scarface Platinum Edition, Casino Anniversary Edition and Carlito’s Way Ultimate Edition inside a faux-velvet lined box. This set also includes the national booklet from the American Gangster 3-Disc Collector’s Edition. There will also be an HD-DVD version to buy, but it will not include the unedited, extended cut, although the extras are the same as the 2-Disc Edition.

Before the backlash for Juno started, Michael Clayton was the movie that polarized most people on the Oscar front. Nominated for seven Oscars including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (George Clooney), Best Supporting Actress (Tilda Swinton) and Best Supporting Actor (Tom Wilkinson), it may only win one – as Swinton knocked one out of the park with her performance. Nick calls it one of the top 10 movies of 2007 while both Jeremy and Devin were not as high on the film. I say, give it a rent and decide for yourself whether it deserves cheers or jeers. It will receive a Blu-Ray the same day, and an HD-DVD version next month.

  • Commentary with director Tom Tykwer and Franka Potente
  • Still Running
  • ”Believe” Music Video

One of the most anticipated Blu-Ray releases for me has been Run Lola Run. Directed by Tom Tykwer (Perfume: The Story of a Murderer), Run Lola Run tells the story of a girl (Franka Potente) who has only twenty minutes to raise a significant amount of money to save her boyfriend (Moritz Bleibtreu) after he loses the money belonging to a very bad guy. Told with a mixture of animation and live action sequences that almost exclusively showcase Lola running, Tykwer constructed a visually dynamic minor masterpiece dealing with the importance of the ticking clock. The film takes the story in three different directions, based on Lola making it to the end point at a specific time. Each story concludes with drastically different results based on only a few seconds missed here and there. It’s worth everyone’s time to watch this film.

  • A conversation with Noah Baumbach and Jennifer Jason Leigh
  • Theatrical Trailers

While I thought The Squid and the Whale was a great little flick, with a terrific performance by Jeff Daniels, I consider Kicking and Screaming to be Noah Baumbach’s masterpiece. With those two critically acclaimed pictures under his belt, it may have come as a surprise when his next leading man turned out to be Jack Black. Margot at the Wedding casts Black as Malcolm, a less than impressive man set to marry his Pauline (Jennifer Jason Leigh). Pauline’s sister Margot (Nicole Kidman) visits after hearing this news, with the intent of letting her estranged sister know how big of a mistake she is making. What follows is a film full of the quirky dialogue and dysfunctional families Baumbach specializes in. The movie failed to come close to its budget, possibly hurting Baumbach in any future attempts making decently budgeted films (The Squid and the Whale cost just under $2 million and brought in close to $8 million while Margot at the Wedding cost $10 million and made just under $2 million). That is a shame because a lesser Baumbach film is still better than the majority of what is out there.
