Since last year Omniproducer Guillermo Del Tor and HBO have been in bed together on a crime thriller called Nutshell Studies. Apparently they’ve got more for us.
The network and filmmaker have added another project to their mutual slate, this one based on a Manga called Monster. It certainly falls right in Del Toro’s giant wheelhouse, with a story about a doctor’s globe-trotting journey to track down a 12-year-old psychopath involved with an apocalyptic plot. It’s a dense, 18-volume series and proved to much for feature film development, which is where it started over at New Line. Steven Thompson (Dr. Who) will write the TV version, the pilot for which Del Toro aims to direct himself.
Pulling from a Manga will be new territory for HBO, and this story strikes as more purely genre than we typically see on the network. Broadened horizons I’d very much like to see, let’s say. Remember that this also joins the TV version of The Strain, which the big DT has set up at FX.
No mention of where Nutshell is at, but these things move slow whether Del Toro is involved or not, so patience TV fans…
