It’s hard to think of two actors that are right in the apex of “blowing up” at the same time more than Idris Elba and Benedict Cumberbatch, and now Guillermo Del Toro has locked down both of them for his most recent films.
Elba, of course, stars in Pacific Rim, which stomps towards us as at a quick pace. Cumberbatch however, will be joining Del Toro’s next film Crimson Peak, the gothic, ghostly romance film the director has set up at WB. The Star Trek Into Darkness villain and Dragon-voicing actor will be joining Emma Stone and Charlie Hunnam in the story Del Toro describes thusly:
“It’s the turn of the century. So it’s at the turn of the century and half of the movie takes place in America, and the other half takes place in a crumbling mansion in Cumbria. And basically it’s a ghost story and gothic romance, trying to subvert the rules of the usual gothic romance. It’s very much… the first half is a love story, then that love story turns darker. And it’s at the same time a ghost story. I’m working at this moment with Lucinda Clarkson who is a really great playwright from the UK. She has the proper degree of perversity and intelligence to turn it into something interesting to watch.”
That’s a dynamic and tone that Cumberbatch should have no problem easing into like a warm bath.
